Bailey's Blog
In a very unorthodox, and completely ludicrous move, Doug Bailey has
decided, in order to keep the fans interested, to become a blogger.
Bailey's Blog will include all of the things that are normally kept secret
within the organization. Doug feels that there really should be no secrets
about the progress, performance, and players for the Massacre. So welcome
to the mind of a maniac!

Thoughts on 6/1/15:
Looking at the team after the 1st 2 months of the 2015 season, i have some
thoughts.
The highlight so far this season has to be the performance of Walt
Patterson. He is batting .307 and leads the team with 10 HR's. He had been
slotted as a leadoff hitter, but we have moved him to the 3 hole seeing as
he is our best hitter. Hopefully that will spark some offense.
I am also very happy with the performance of Arnie Franklin. Our 1st round
draft choice this season was a little older than a traditional pick, and we
lost 2 years of improvement drafting a 25 year old. However, he is leading
the ROY balloting, and is hitting .270 with 9 jacks. If he can perform like
that for 9 years, we will be happy with his selection.
Hank Berblinger and Rob Heintzelman are also hitting over .300, and fill
out a very solid top of the order right now.
Slots 5-9 are still a work in progress. Chico Valle has failed to produce
any power to this point, however his +9 defense at SS is impressive. It is
a little early to pile on newly acquired Bobby Gross, although it is
looking evident that he will most likely spend most of the season on the
farm.
On the pitching side, there is a huge deficiency. Team has a 4.91 ERA
which is 2nd to last in the majors. Egan and Davis are performing well at
the back of the bullpen, but there is not much hope or progress out of the
starters. While Fred Thomas will most likely anchor the staff in a few
years, there is not much else to write home about. Ideally we would like
to move some veteran talent, and try to add someone to the rotation.
That is all for today, more info to come as things develop!

Thoughts on 6/24/15:
Everyone in the front office is very excited about our first series sweep
of the season! Baltimore is a credible franchise that has a chance at the
playoffs this season, and we were able to get it done. It is nice to see
some fruit of progress from a team that has struggled so mightily.
Fred Martin pitched a 3 hitter, giving up 1 run and 1 walk in 8 innings for
the win in game 1. He also laid down a sac bunt in the 3rd to put Mike
Curry in scoring position for Hank Berblinger. Pat Rice had a HR in the 2nd
which consisted of all of the scoring for the Massacre in a 2-1 pitcher's
duel.
In Game 2, The Massacre bats got to Marriott in the 7th inning, and put up
a 7 spot anchored by HR's by Pat Rice and newcomer Ralph Kennedy. Jackie
Smith pitched a complete game, giving up 7 hits and 3 earned runs.
In Game 3, Ralph Kennedy hit a 2 run shot in the 4th inning to put the
Massacre up 2-0. Marlon Bailey pitched 8 innings, giving up 4 hits and no
runs. Roger Daal added a run for Baltimore in the 9th off of closer Rusty
Davis, but Davis was able to limit the damage and get the save.
Here is hoping that the team can build on this.

Thoughts on 8/31/15:
We are on the eve of September call-ups, and our final evaluation period
for several players in the organization. The list of eligible draftees for
next season looks promising, and we should be able to nab two quality
players in the 1st round. We gave up our 2nd round pick to acquire Hector
Trombley, but he will have to be converted to the infield. The second
rounder should turn out to be pretty valuable however.

Thoughts on 4/1/16:
It is the dawn of a new season here in Boston. 2016 is upon us. The
Massacre has made some changes in the offseason, but mostly want to build
on the foundation that was started in 2015. The team only had 49 wins last
season, which was the worst record in the league. However, the rays of
progress shined on the team all season, and much improvement is expected in
2016.
With the #1 overall pick of the 2016 first year player draft, the Boston
Massacre select RHP Ryan Pratt from Vanderbilt University. Pratt is
expected to be the opening day starter in 2016. We expect for him to anchor
the staff for many years. With the 12th overall pick, we managed to snag
Bruce Logan, a right handed relief pitcher from Long Beach State. Logan has
a very nasty slider, and is expected to be the 8th inning guy, bridging the
gap to Rusty Davis. In the second round, we grabbed Rene Smith from
Missouri. He played SS in college, but projects to RF for the Massacre. He
will get some opportunities this season for at bats, but is really going to
have to excel to stick.
Also in the offseason, we acquired veteran OF Gary Voyles from Montreal.
Voyles is expected to split time at 1B with Pat Rice, giving a veteran
presence to a very young team.
The Massacre expect to make a few more moves in the offseason, so the
roster is not yet set. Spring Training will determine the final roster very
soon.

Thoughts on 4/21/16:
After the first 3 weeks of the season, there are some highs and lows in the
teams performance. 8-10 is an adequate start. If we had won 1 more during
this span we would be at .500.
I am very happy with the performance of #1 overall pick Ryan Pratt. In 4
starts, he is 2-1 with a 3.54 ERA. He had 3 quality starts, but his last
start was not very impressive. Still, a rookie with that kind of pressure
is gonna have a bad outing. We look forward to him bouncing back in the
next start.
On the other side of the coin is a very disappointing Jackie Smith. In 4
starts so far this season, he has not made it out of the 5th inning,
leaving after 4 innings in 2 of the 4. He has given up an average of 6.25
runs a game. He has been moved to the bullpen for the time being.
Bailey and Martin have been solid, Bailey having one bad game so far, and
after being shelled in his first start, Martin has improved to 3-0,
including one complete game. Oscar Fermin has replaced Smith in the
rotation for the time being, and we are currently looking for a mentor
replacement for Richardson.
The bullpen has only contributed to 3 of the losses. Egan has not performed
well, and Logan has struggled in a couple of outings. There is a definite
need to strengthen the pen going forward.
The biggest glaring problem in the field is the performance of Walt
Patterson. He is batting .163 vs R, which is not what was expected from a
guy expected to be the 3-hole hitter, and strength of the team. Franklin is
however performing very well. Currently, the team plan to go with the hot
bat in most situations. Bobby Gross has already found himself back in the
minors, trying to work on his hitting.
That is it for now, still would like to eventually commit to a 1st baseman,
and Lee is making it difficult to play Valle regularly.

Thoughts on 10-19-2016:
Well, the 2016 season has come to a close. The Massacre have improved to 71
wins this season, up from 49 last season. 22 wins is a solid improvement.
We are very happy with our #1 overall pick last season, SP Ryan Pratt. He
flirted with the Cy Young, AL AS Starter, and ROY for half of the season,
but ran into some trouble down the stretch and ended up with no awards. We
still believe that there is a Cy in his future. He should continue to head
up our rotation. RP Bruce Logan was injured for a large part of the season,
but we still feel like he is a solid piece to improving the bullpen going
forward. Marlon Bailey had a great ERA all season, but could not get any
run support.
Arnie Franklin improved in his second season, hitting 33 bombs and 101
RBIs. He should continue to solidify his spot as the cleanup hitter in the
lineup. Walt Patterson struggled mightily in the first half, but turned it
on in the second half after a short stint in the minors. We still expect
him to be a huge part of the top of the lineup. We have seen no real
progress in 2B Bobby Gross or CF Hector Trombley. We hope for significant
improvements with these 2 players next season. Mike Curry has earned
another season on the roster, with 18 homers, and can be a solid option at
both 1B and the OF in reserve.
We have the 6th overall pick this season, and looking at the draft, we feel
that we will have an opportunity to get a player that can contribute to
this team, possibly next season. We hope to hit .500 next season, which
would mean a 10 win improvement.

Thoughts on 10-03-2017:
Well, the curtains have closed on the 2017 season. The Massacre have
improved to 80 wins this season, up from 71 last season. We fell 1 win
short of our goal of .500, but still are very happy with the overall
improvement of the club.
SP Ryan Pratt took a step back this season. He ended the season 9-13, down
from 20-11 in his rookie season. He spent a little time in the minors
working on mechanics, but he needs to bounce back in 2018. Marlon Bailey
however continued to impress, amassing 19 wins this season. Veteran Don
Warmoth was brought in this season to help mentor the young staff, and ate
quite a few innings. It is likely that Fred Thomas will get some innings
this season, but the bottom of the rotation is still a question mark.
As for the pen, Rusty Davis continues to hold down the closer spot. Bruce
Logan put up similar numbers from last season, so we expect him to at least
hold down a spot. Amos Boris has improved nicely in the minors, and should
see time in the majors in 2018.
Arnie Franklin let off a little in his third season, dropping back down to
his rookie year numbers. He is still expected to solidify his spot as the
cleanup hitter in the lineup, however we are experimenting with the idea of
moving him to 1st base. Walt Patterson has established himself as a
.270-.280 hitter, with 13-15 homers and 80-90 RBI's. He will continue to
play CF and RF. Hank Berblinger continues to show solid defensive skill in
LF, so we expect him to continue to man that spot, with Ferdie Schrieber
coming up and showing some power potential in RF. 2B Bobby Gross and CF
Hector Trombley have not established themselves as fixtures in the lineup,
but will continue to get opportunities this season.
We have the 6th overall pick again this season, but are more interested in
seeing Boris, Thomas, Smith, etc. earn playing time, rather than focus on
the draftees. Our biggest focus in the offseason is finding a true leadoff
hitter. We tried Brian Klein breifly, but i don't expect him to win the
job in 2018.
I expect 2018, to be similar to 2017, but hope to continue to improve as
we have the last 2 seasons. Our goal is 90 wins, but i expect to be around
85.

Thoughts on 10-15-2017
The #1 priority for the Massacre this offseason was acquiring a leadoff
hitter. Finally, after several offers on a few different players that fit
our direction, the Massacre have acquired Bert Siwy from Seattle. Siwy is
the perfect fit for the top of the Massacre lineup, and he didnt come
cheap. Veteran 2B/OF Jeff Lampard went to Seattle, as well as our 1st round
picks in 2018 and 2019. Our only concern with Siwy is his health. He missed
a whole month in 2016 and 2018. His defense at 2B improved substantially
in 2017. Our hope is that his past issues with defense were due to his
transition to the position, and we expect him to be able to hold down 2b
for the near future. The acquisition of Siwy puts a question mark on the
future of Bobby Gross. Chico Valle is defensively superior at SS, but has
difficulty hitting righties. Gross could see some time at SS, or find a
move to 3B if he can start hitting. Also, with Berblinger, Patterson, and
Schreiber expected to man the outfield, the conversion of Trombley to 2B is
also no longer needed. Both Gross and Trombley are being shopped this
offseason, with a bullpen arm being a target if possible. Both players are
in a numbers game to get playing time. Also, this acquisition officially
ends the Brian Klein experiment. However teams should take note, that he
did very well when given the chance.
That is all for now!

Thoughts on 9/4/2018:
Well, this season has not been one of significant improvement. Walt
Patterson has played well this season, and seems to be the answer in CF.
Hank Berblinger has solidified LF both defensively and offensively. The
price paid for 2B Bert Siwy is looking very high right now. While he has
not performed poorly this season, his .avg and ops are down. He is still
expected to hold down the position as both leadoff hitter nad second base.
Arnie Franklin's average was quite a bit down this season, as he struggled
early. His partial transition to 1B this season has hurt his bat. He will
most likely take most of September off. Blaine Atwood has earned the
starting SS job, and will most likely start there in 2019. Bobby Gross has
a chance at the 3B job next season if he performs well in Sept. Franklin
would then continue his move to 1st. The 2019 lineup should be close to
being set, however there is going to have to be significant improvement
next season.
The rotation will start with Bailey, Pratt, Thomas in 2019. The last 2
spots are still and open battle. Fred Martin, will most likely take one of
the spots due to his experience, which leaves 1 spot for Smith, Russell, or
a new acquisition.
The bullpen is still very much undecided. Rusty Davis will be the closer,
and Bruce Logan will set him up. The other 4 spots will be up for grabs
with Roarke, Warmoth, Sheely, Egan, Boris, Brumley and either Smith or
Russell fighting for them.
September is an opportunity for candidates to emerge.

Boston has a bunch of good young hitters. Siwy, Gross, Patterson,
Berblinger, Trombley, and Schrelber will make a very nice core. With Pratt
and Thomas at the top of the rotation, and other good young players in the
system, Boston fans definitely have something to look forward to.

Thoughts on 7/13/2019:
Well, this season has not seen the improvement that has been expected. In
fact, we are 2-8 in our last 10 after acquiring Scott Davis. Davis's
average has dropped significantly since joining the Massacre as well. We
feel very strongly about this team on paper, but that's why they play the
games i guess.
The young pitching has not been bad, but the run support is just not there.
Siwy has disappointed significantly, and we can only hope that in the next
few years, he hits his stride. Franklin is what he is, and i will be happy
with his Pena-like bat at 1B. Patterson has improved, and is playing well.
Gross is finally settling in at 3rd, but has probably gotten too little
playing time to develop into a true solution. Valle is starting to come
around, and can play anywhere in the infield. Trombley and Smith look like
backup outfielders at best, however Smith will get a chance to play 1B
occasionally.
Pratt and Thomas will be fine, Bailey makes a solid #3. Russell will get a
chance to earn the #4 spot, since Smith has been less than stellar. There
is a good chance that if Russell does not earn the #4 spot, he will be a
likely replacement for Rusty Davis. Royer will also factor into this mix.
Logan's improvement was significantly hindered by injuries, but he still
can make a good setup type guy. Boris will complete to close at some point
possibly, but has looked very impressive.
We have to hope that as these pitchers improve, there is a window where
everything comes together. It just isn't today.

Thoughts on 10/3/2019:
Well, we are on the eve of another season. 83-79 is an improvement over
75-87, but overall is a minimal improvement from 2017. Can this team take
it to the next level in 2020?
Let's start with the outlook on starting pitching. Ryan Pratt ended the
season 12-14 with a 4.02 ERA. He still has not returned to his 20 game
winning form, but he has improved from 2017-2019. We are hoping for a big
year next season. Fred Thomas also had a 4.01 ERA, but was 5-13 in his
first season as a starter. We expect improvement going forward, and more
run support. Marlon Bailey was solid, which again did not show up in the
win total. Fred Martin has locked down the #5 slot in 2020, and has
improved. Neither Smith nor Russell locked down the #4 slot in 2020, so
there is a good chance Royer will get the chance next season, with both
Smith and Russell getting a shot in the pen. Warmoth, Boris, Logan, and
Davis will fill out the pen.
In the field, we made the move for Scott Davis to help the pitchers along,
as well as adding a bat to the order. Siwy brought his average up
significantly in the second half, so we hope to see him lead off next
season, with Patterson in the 2 hole, Davis in the 3, and Schreiber batting
clean up. He will get protection from Franklin at 1st, who no longer has to
focus on the #4 slot. Valle finally seemed to hit his stride this season,
so he will get a chance to compete with Atwood for SS and the #6 slot. Hank
Berblinger will play LF and bat 7th, and 3rd base will either be Atwood, or
the improving Gross will have a chance to lock it down. We will be open to
making a move to improve at 3rd if an opportunity arises.
So things are starting to take hold on this team, we feel like we have the
personnel. Now it is just time to WIN!

Thoughts on 4/1/2020:
Well, the Boston Massacre are on the eve of another season. We hope that
the twenties will be known as the decade of massacre. We are happy with the
trade with Brooklyn for Billy McElveen. The draft didn't have any
immediate impact players, and though Brooklyn got a very capable teeenage
pitcher with the 1st round pick, we didn't feel like we had the time to
develop him, and needed someone closer to the majors. McElveen will most
likely replace Davis next season as the closer, allowing Boris, Logan,
Smith and Russell to fill out most of the pen going forward. The second
round brought a little power in Chet Moffitt, but he projects as a bench
option/Sept callup at best. The rest of the draft was unfruitful. With the
drastic changes in the league makeups, it will be interesting to see where
we slot. We are looking forward to being more competitive in the future.
